Anna-Maria Karjalainen, ICA Europe Director for Climate and Sustainability, calls on the next European Commission to take robust action together with Member States to ensure that strategic electrointensive industries like copper have access to competitively priced electricity in the EU. There is potential to increase copper production in Europe, and ICA members are committed to doing that in a sustainable and responsible way.
Electricity is Europe’s most important energy source for copper smelting and refining, and its consumption is increasing as the sector decarbonizes. By expanding fossil-free electricity, copper producers can significantly reduce their GHG emissions, leading to a more sustainable and competitive copper industry in the EU.
