Industry and environmental organisations call for measures to improve the reuse and high-quality recycling of materials and components from end-of-life vehicles

♻️ Copper is essential to Europe’s clean energy future — powering everything from renewable technologies and power grids to the vehicles driving the green transition. But without targeted dismantling and quality-based recycling, much of this critical material is lost at end of life.

As co-legislators continue negotiations on the proposed End of Life Vehicles Regulation, the International Copper Association Europe, together with environmental NGOs and industry groups, is calling for a stronger, more circular framework.
🚗 Today, between 1.7 – 5.8kg of copper per vehicle goes unrecovered on average. That is an unacceptable waste of a Strategic Raw Material that Europe cannot afford to lose.

We urge policymakers to:
✅ Maintain dismantling requirements and ensure copper-rich components like wiring harnesses and charging cables are properly removed prior to pre-processing
✅ Set ambitious quality thresholds to avoid copper losses in recovered fractions
